ENCOUNTER – Sonic Spaces

A concert between electronics, voice and code.

Electronic music Space Silence Encounter

Idea

A room.

A synthesizer.

A voice.

A signal.

Music.

Some sounds arise in the moment. Others come from recordings, memories or from music that existed long before this evening. Some stay almost unchanged; others are stretched, repeated, distorted or placed in a new context.

ENCOUNTER – Sonic Spaces moves between these states.

Between human and machine.

Between closeness and distance.

Between sound and silence.

Technology is not the focus, but the question of what arises in listening.

Where does music begin?

Stone wall in a church with a window pattern of light and shadow, a small table with a synthesizer at the right edge.

The room plays along.

The church is not a backdrop. Its height, its surfaces, its reverberation and its silence become part of the music.

Electronics can simulate rooms. Here, the room is already there.

In the device, sound is a signal. In the room, it becomes air, stone and wood.

At one point in the evening, the artificial reverb stays off. Then only the building answers – with a reverberation nobody dialed in.

Listen

ENCOUNTER draws on original electronic sounds and improvisation, selected pieces by other artists, voices and a few spoken thoughts.

Sound fragments, sketches and a playlist for the evening will gradually be collected here.

SOUND FRAGMENTS TO FOLLOW

Can an electronic sound be intimate?

Close-up of a synthesizer with patch cables and two effects units on a table, a church window and candle stands blurred in the background.

A small setup. A large room.

The setup stays deliberately simple. Original sounds are made live, altered, layered, removed again and combined anew.

The technology is not hidden. Cables, controls and devices stay visible – part of what comes into being in the moment.

Depending on the room and the evening, instruments, effects and setup change. No concert has to sound exactly like the last.

What makes sound human?

VOICE / GESTURE / MEMORY / SPACE / CODE

ENCOUNTER is a concert for listening.

The evening combines live-made electronic sounds and improvisation with selected pieces by other artists, voices and a few spoken thoughts.

Some things flow into one another. Others stand deliberately alone. In between, there is room for silence.

There is nothing you need to know or understand beforehand. You sit in the room and listen. What gains closeness, strangeness, memory or meaning there is left to each person.

DATES

The first dates will be announced here.

Person

Peter Langkafel develops artistic projects under the name LANGKAFEL around music, space, perception and technology.

He is a physician and professor. Beyond music, too, he is occupied with the question of how technology changes our everyday lives and our perception.

Music has accompanied him for many years. He plays drums and synthesizer and works with electronic sounds, effects, voice and digital tools.

ENCOUNTER is one of his projects – an attempt to bring music, special spaces and attentive listening into relation with one another.

Electronic music. Space. Silence. Encounter.

ENCOUNTER is not a story to be understood. It is an invitation to listen differently for a while.

What emerges is not predetermined. Closeness or strangeness. Memory. Unrest. Perhaps a question that wasn't there before.

IN

Arriving. Listening. Noticing.

A sound begins, changes, disappears. The space responds.

IN is the invitation to enter into it, without having to know where it leads.

DEEP

Eventually, something of the listening echoes on. A thought. A memory. A question.

What really concerns me? What sustains me? What am I missing? What do I believe? What do I doubt?

DEEP offers no answers. It leaves room for the questions that so easily vanish in everyday life.

SAD

Not everything in life can be resolved.

Loss, loneliness, fear, failure and grief are part of human experience. Some things pass. Some things remain.

SAD does not try to make the heavy beautiful. It gives it space.

HOPE

And yet something can open.

Hope does not mean knowing that everything will be fine. Perhaps it means not giving up on the possibility of good.

Here ENCOUNTER also touches the question of faith, not as a creed, but as an open question: What sustains us when certainty is missing? What remains when not everything can be explained or controlled?

We don't know what is coming.

And we remain open all the same.

Empty stool beside a table with a synthesizer, cables and effects units on a rug in the side light of a church.

What remains when the sound is over?
